Google to Make (more) in India

Google remains committed to building products in India and the company’s $10 billion Google for India Digitisation Fund is a “reflection of our confidence,” Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google, said on an analyst call.

The company wants to leverage its user base in the country to test products. Specifically for YouTube, the plan is to launch monetization features in India before expanding elsewhere.

“When I look at YouTube in India, some of the commerce ideas we talked about earlier, you may see our first stride in India, because we can get quicker feedback, [it’s got a] very dynamic youthful population. And so we’ll do it there and then roll it out globally,” Pichai said.

Over the last few years, Google has upped its focus on developing products and features for India and shipping them to other geographies. Examples include the file manager app Google Files Go and the offline feature for Google Maps.
